Read more...is a Contemporary painter, printmaker, and sculptor, with a wide body of figurative and often humorous work. Inspired by Social Realism and German Expressionism, Eisenman frequently mines art history for her imagery—both satirizing the bourgeois and imbuing them with pathos. Her work is also autobiographical, laced with personal history and sometimes featuring stand-ins for herself or her friends.
Born in Verdun, France where her father worked as an Army psychiatrist, she grew up in Scarsdale, NY. She attended the Rhode Island School of Design and graduated in 1987 with a BFA. Eisenman’s first exhibition was in 1990 at the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art in Staten Island, NY. It wasn’t until two years later that she had her first solo showing, which took place at the Shoshana Wayne Gallery in Santa Monica, CA. The gallery showed her work multiple times over the years, and she also had solo shows at the Noga Gallery in Tel Aviv, Israel; the Galerie Barbara Weiss in Berlin, Germany; the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York, NY; and the Entwistle Gallery in London, England.
Eisenman currently lives and works in New York. In 2015, she was awarded the MacArthur "genius" grant.
